Adopting a Rescue Cat

March 15, 2025

Looking to add a new furry friend to your family? If that’s the case, you might be thinking about going to a shelter to find a kitty. This is a fantastic way to locate a new feline companion! Continue reading for suggestions from a local Galloway, OH vet on how to find Fluffy and help her settle in.

Choosing the Right Kitty

Choosing a cat can be both enjoyable and challenging. After all, Fluffy will be with you for a long time, perhaps decades. It’s critical to find the purrfect fit.

There are a few points to consider. Breed is one. There is less variance in kitty breeds than dog breeds, but this does not mean breed doesn’t matter. Siamese cats are known for their active and lovable personalities, as well as their tendency to express their ideas openly. A Ragdoll, on the other hand, is likely to be a sweet and quiet little love bug.

The age of your feline companion should  also be taken into consideration. Cats in shelters are at different phases of life. There are advantages and disadvantages to each. Kittens are cute, lovable, fun, playful, and really cute. It is also beneficial to raise your pet yourself so that she becomes accustomed to your voice and characteristics. However, baby cats  are like furry little toddlers: small bundles of mischief. Adult cats are also appealing. Fluffy may still be lively, but she has likely outgrown the desire (and capacity) to burrow under your entertainment center or climb the shower curtains. Seniors are also highly likable. A senior cat may not be as playful as a baby, but this is not necessarily a negative trait. It’s lovely to have a relaxed pet who just wants to sleep and cuddle!

Then there’s appearance. Many of our clients believe their cats are the cutest felines ever, and they are not mistaken!

Fluffy’s purrsonality matters as well. One cat may be a cuddly lapcat, while another may simply judge you from her cat tower.

Last but not least, look into the kitty’s health. If you look through adoptable pet listings, you may find that several cats have FeLV. Fluffy’s illness does not preclude her from living a full and happy life. However, if you have another cat, they would not be a suitable match. If you wish to get two kittens, try getting two FeLV-positive ones.

Preparing For Your Feline Friend

Before you bring your kitty friend home, you’ll need to gather some items. Your feline pal will require food, toys, a carrier, dishes, leash, collar, and beds. A litterbox and litter are also musts. Kitty purrniture is optional, but appreciated.

Some of these items should be selected keeping Fluffy’s age in mind. If you have a kitten, avoid clay and clumping cat litter. A senior may require a litterbox that is low to the ground and simple to get into and out of.

Put your pet’s belongings in a quiet location so she has a comfortable place to relax.

Take Fluffy To The Galloway, OH Veterinarian

One of the first things you should do is take your feline companion to the vet. We love meeting new patients! Aside from purr checks, we’ll give Fluffy a thorough nose-to-tail examination. Your cat will also have to be checked for illnesses and parasites. Shelters normally try to keep things clean and disinfected, but with pets coming and going on a daily basis, it is impossible to maintain a sterile atmosphere. Your cat should be tested for fleas, ticks, and worms. Fluffy will have to get started on parasite management. Your veterinarian will also talk to you about product options and help you pick the one that works best for you and your feline overlord.

Your veterinarian will discuss any recommended vaccines, screenings, or panels with you. This is also a good time to ask questions regarding your cat’s care needs. Get personalized guidance for your pet’s diet, grooming, and overall care. We’re always willing to help!
