7 Ways to Pamper a Senior Dog

November 15, 2015

Is your dog entering his golden years? It may seem like just yesterday that Fido was a young, furry bundle of energy, but now your four-legged buddy is slowing down, and you’re seeing grey around his muzzle. As he ages, your pooch will still be the same loving pet as always, but his needs will change a bit. A good diet, proper exercise regimen, and regular veterinary care will still be essential to your canine friend’s health, but beyond that, you’ll want to focus on keeping your dog comfortable and happy. In this article, a local Galloway, OH vet offers some ways to pamper your older dog.

Comfy Bed

Just like people, dogs often develop various aches and pains as they age. Make sure Fido has a nice, comfy bed to sleep in. We recommend investing in a good orthopedic doggy bed to help your pet sleep more comfortably.

Elevated Dishes

Many older dogs find it easier to eat from raised dishes. These are much more comfortable for Fido to eat from than bowls on the floor. Consider upgrading your pet’s dinnerware.

Massage

Your old buddy may get stiff and sore as he ages. Treat your pet to gentle massages. A nice rubdown is just as relaxing for Fido as it is for us! It will also help with his circulation, and can soothe those aches and pains.

Supplements

Certain supplements can be very beneficial to older dogs. For instance, fish oil can help lubricate your pet’s bones and joints. Ask your vet for specific recommendations.

Pet Ramps

As your dog grows older, he’ll begin to have more difficulty getting in and out of cars, and climbing onto furniture. Consider getting a pet ramp to help him stay mobile.

Heating Pad

Many older dogs develop painful bone and joint conditions, such as arthritis and hip dysplasia, as they age. A heating pad can help soothe your pet’s pain. Just be sure to use it on a low setting. Ask your vet for specific advice.

Love

Fido’s golden years are a special time. Spend lots of quality time with your dog: pet him, talk to him, and offer him belly rubs. You may find your senior pet becoming even more adorable as he ages!
